The GOP’s Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Today was not a good day for the GOP. The cracks in the dam are definitely widening, and they aren’t going to get better until the government is funded. There are murmurs coming from the Hill that McConnell and Schumer might have worked something out, and that we should tentatively expect a vote tomorrow afternoon or evening. In the meantime, GOP infighting is picking up and tensions are sky-high.

“This is your fault”

On a day that saw 6 GOP Senators break from Trump, and a bill from the minority get more votes than the bill backed by POTUS, the anger started to boil over into a GOP luncheon just prior to the voting, as reported by the Washington Post.

“This is your fault,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) told Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) at one point, according to two Republicans who attended the lunch and witnessed the exchange.

“Are you suggesting I’m enjoying this?” McConnell snapped back, according to the people who attended the lunch.

Also during the lunch, McConnell made clear to Pence and others in the room that the shutdown was not his idea and was not working. According to Republicans familiar with his comments, he quoted a favorite saying that he often uses to express his displeasure with government shutdowns: “There is no education in the second kick of a mule.”

What’s next?

The Democrats have made it clear that they will not support a CR that has a down payment, or any other kind of funding for Trump’s wall. The GOP is getting absolutely hammered in polls. Pelosi and Schumer baited Trump beautifully during his Oval Office outburst, and the American people haven’t forgotten. As much as he tries to deflect and shift blame, the soundbite will always exist of him claiming the shutdown.

Ultimately, I am glad the Democrats aren’t caving. We can’t afford to reward this behavior from POTUS, and the Republicans know that. With that being said, I hope it ends soon. There are a lot of families hurting out there. Many will miss their second paycheck tomorrow. Credit scores are being ruined, refrigerators are empty, mortgages are falling behind, and car notes are going unpaid. This is not the way we should be rewarding people who have dedicated their lives to public service. Many of them could make far more money in the private sector, but they stay anyway. Their work matters, and they genuinely like it. Then we treat them like this. Below is a photo you may have seen on Twitter: this is a challenge coin the Secret Service had made during the shutdown.

I also want to thank everyone again who has supported me during all of this. You guys have been lifesavers.

  1. No kidding. There is no reason at all for a Democratic rescue mission on this one – the Republicans own the mess from top to bottom. I just hope Schumer doesn’t sell out Pelosi…I don’t really trust him on things like this. Regrets to those going unpaid – it’s a bad deal, and there’s really no excuse for it.

  2. Thank you Angry. I’m so sad that I don’t live closer to where the action is! I would love U.K. give them a piece of my mind!
Tomorrow is Friday! I pray their is a resolution!!
My fried is a flight attendant in PDX has been with Demta for 30 years. This is the most in safe flying she has ever done!! She is petrified for tomorrow’s flight! If we have a national air disaster it’s alk over for the Republican Party!

    1. Heidi,

I feel for your friend and all of the other brave souls who are trying to protect our skies and fly in those planes. I do not put all of the blame on the GOP. I put the blame on the Air Carrier’s because if they would have put their foot down at the beginning this would be over. They put dollars over people. They are playing the odds. If a plane crashes, they have insurance and can blame the GOP.
If there is one calamity and all planes are grounded, they will be saved as they were after 9/11. They are greedy bastards just like Wall Street!

  3. Quick Question.. Trying to support on Patreon. It says it will charge 25 today but again in 6 days. It doesn’t charge on a monthly basis or prorate? Please let me know. If not, I’ll be back on the 1st because you’re simple marvelous! You’re the first thing I see when I wake up/close eyes each day! (sad but true).

    1. Huh, I didn’t know Patreon charged like that. I thought it was monthly based on the time you subscribe, but I guess it charges immediately, and then again on the 1st of every month. That’s really strange.
